Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, and women are disproportionately affected by it. Why is that, and when is supplementation relevant?

Women of childbearing age lose blood monthly during menstruation. Blood contains hemoglobin — and hemoglobin contains iron. The heavier the menstruation, the greater the iron loss per cycle.

The recommended daily iron intake for women of childbearing age is 16 mg per day — almost double the recommendation for men (10 mg). Through diet alone, this is difficult for many women to achieve, especially with a plant-based diet.

Signs that may indicate low iron intake: persistent fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath on exertion, concentration problems, and reduced immunity. These are non-specific symptoms that a blood test can clarify.

Iron from plant sources (non-heme iron) is absorbed less well than iron from meat (heme iron). Women who eat vegetarian or vegan therefore have an increased risk of insufficient iron intake.

A supplement with iron bisglycinate (the well-absorbed chelated form) and vitamin C for better absorption offers a practical supplement — suitable for long-term use, partly thanks to the mild iron form.

Conclusion: Women of childbearing age and women with a plant-based diet have an increased risk of low iron intake. A quality iron supplement with bisglycinate and vitamin C is a thoughtful daily supplement.
